Janet Culbertson was an environmental and socially active artist since the 1970's. Nancy Cohen of the New Jersey Center for the Arts wrote; "Her entire body of work is a statement against the violence she sees being inflicted upon the environment. Her means of conveying this notion is through her materials." The artist used mica minerals and iridescent pigments with oil paints and objects to create gritty textures and depict the scorched earth, oil spill damage, habitat erosion, and threatened landscapes and animals.
